As part of the larger process known as knowledge discovery, data mining is the process of extracting information from large volumes of data.
Data warehousing is one of the key data management technologies to support data mining. There are some multi-disciplinary fields of research, which connect to data mining: database technology, statistics, visualization, machine learning, expert systems.
The goals of data mining include improving marketing capabilities, detecting abnormal patterns, and predicting the future based on past experiences and current trends, so the results of data mining attach to decision support systems.
Trends in data mining are data mining in distributed, heterogeneous and legacy databases, metadata mining, multimedia data mining and web mining.
